A policeman is killed in Mannar and Batticaloa Special Investigation Unit take a teenager into custody.
Policeman killedA Policeman was killed and 6 were wounded when the Liberation Tigers attacked a road checkpoint south of Murunkan Police Station in the Mannar district this morning around 11.30 a.m, sources said. The dead policeman has been identified as Sarath Uthayakumara. The wounded policemen have been taken to the Anuradhapura hospital. Sources said three of them seriously wounded. The police said the attack was repulsed. On the request of the acting Officer In Charge of Murunkan Police Station Sub Inspector Ariyadasa, the Mannar district judge visited the hospital to inspect the dead body of the Police and ordered an inquest.
Youth in SIU custodyLogitharajah Sathiskumar(16) who was arrested by the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) on June 5 at Kinnaiyadi, Valaichchenai was handed over to the Special Investigation Unit of the Batticaloa Police today, residents said. The youth, who had been working in a rice mill at Addalachchenai, was arrested by the SLA when he returned home on leave, sources said. The youth who had been detained in the SLA camp at the Valaichchenai paper factory was later handed over to the local Police. Now he is in the custody of the SIU., Batticaloa Police for further investigation.
