International Community answerable, say Jaffna University students

[TamilNet, Sunday, 27 May 2012, 01:20 GMT]
In the absence of no action to the attack on the student leader aiming at denial of ‘right to memory’ of the Tamil student community, the ultimate responsibility goes with the international community that has unleashed and upholds such a militarized setup against Tamils, commented boycotting students of the University of Jaffna who have decided to attend classes from Monday, after a closed-door meeting with the occupying Sinhala Commander for which the student representatives were taken under threat of ‘dire consequences’. In a statement released on Friday the student’s union has asked the question that the international community has to answer what is the point in the Geneva resolution and the LLRC report. Tamil politicians should realize the futility of participating the delay tactics by which Colombo engages the IC, the statement said.

The importance given by the international community to the release of the general who led the war is not given to the plight of Tamils, the statement pointed out.

While the focus is in the enactment of absorbing the Tamil National Alliance into the parliamentary select committee process of the South, Sinhala colonisation, militarisation, land grab, attack and intimidation on the civil and student leadership of Tamils and incarceration of Tamil political prisoners continue in the country of Tamils. For whom the ‘talks’ is the question. Tamil parliamentarians have to take a firm stand on the situation. The time demands people-centric decisions based on logic and farsightedness, the statement said.

The students’ union urged the world countries to come out with meaningful action ensuring the security of students, social activists and the common public. They also pleaded the world countries to conceive solutions to the national question of Tamils in the island that commensurate the kind of holocaust they had undergone.

The secretary of the Jaffna University Students’ Association, Mr. P. Darshanant was brutally attacked by iron rods by an SL military intelligence squad at Kaladdy Junction near the university on 18th May, around 8.15 AM, the student union statement openly indicted the occupying Sinhala military.

Darshananth was on his way to organize the Mu’l’lvaaykkaal remembrance at the university on that day. Last year during the remembrance, the president of the union, Mr. S. Thavabalasingham was attacked in the same way. Hitherto there is no action on the attack.

Both attacks took place within 100 meters of the SL military check post near the university campus.

During the intimidating talks, the occupying Sinhala commander Hathurusinghe told the student representatives that he would not provide security and his military is not answerable to attacks when students engage in political or social activities.

The same Sinhala military on 17th May forced Tamil school children to participate in its ‘Mu’l’livaaykkaal victory day’ and humiliated them by making them present medals to the Sinhala soldiers who waged the genocidal war.

The presence of SL military is to silence voices, erase memory and to deny the space for Tamils to socially and politically rebuild themselves, the statement of the students’ union said, adding that the intimidation on the civil society activists and the Bishop of Mannaar takes place in the same line.

The University of Jaffna, long known for its Tamil nationalist spirit, has been particularly targeted through manipulations in the appointment of the VC, governing council members, non-academic staff as well as by infiltrations into the university by the spies of the SL military, accused the student union statement.

Meanwhile, erasing memory of the genocide or denying the right to memory of Eezham Tamils is a common agenda of all those who were involved in the genocide and abetted it, Tamil political observers pointed out by citing the USA, the West tagged behind it including the failed peace facilitators and India still not accepting what they had abetted and continue to abet is genocide.

The US diplomats in the island are keen in individually luring Tamil activists by ‘promising’ them security, but what takes place collectively to the nation of Eezham Tamils in the island is quite the opposite, political observers pointed out citing a series of post war happenings like the Grease Devil attacks taking different avatars. The whole process raises the question ‘who is behind ultimately’, tracing the line of thinking to the ‘militarized reconciliation’ hatched in the US State department, the observers said.

If erasing the memory is the experiment currently undertaken by the erring international community, it was Priyanka Gandhi who came out with the most open statement in this regard during the war that human beings don’t forgive. She might have meant it for individuals, but now there is a nation of people facing the question how to forgive and whom to forgive.

Memory could be compromised only when collective justice in concrete terms comes to the affected people, Tamil political observers further said.
