The Special Task Force shot dead a youth at Kaluthaavalai in Batticaloa at around 10.45 p.m. last night, said sources in the area. The STF said that they ambushed a group of Liberation Tigers when they tried to infiltrate an area controlled by the security forces.

The STF further said that one T-56 assault riffle, a cyanide capsule, and a grenade were recovered.

A fire-fight followed the incident, they added.

Meanwhile Sri Lanka Army sources said that three suspected members of the Liberation Tigers were arrested yesterday at Maharambaikulam, about 3 km north east of Vavuniya town.

The sources said that 2 claymore mines, 1 car battery, 1 wire roll, 1 T-56 night vision fitter sniper gun were recovered from a culvert that was used as a hiding place by the LTTE.
