Sixty year old man wounded in Jaffna

A sixty year-old man, Saravanamuthu Kathiravelu of Alaveddi in the Jaffna peninsula was shot by army personnel at around 3.45 a.m. this morning, said residents in the area.

The wounded farmer was first admitted to the Tellippalai hospital. As his condition was critical, he was transferred to the Jaffna Teaching hospital.

He sustained injuries on his left leg and hand, hospital sources said.

Relatives said that the victim was shot by army personnel when he went to his land to irrigate vegetable crops.

Security sources said that he was shot as he defied an army imposed curfew in the peninsula.


Fire destroys sentry points and generator in Jaffna

Sudden fires completely destroyed Sri Lankan Navy sentry points at Chulipuram, Thiruvadinilai and Nelliyan in the Jaffna peninsula on the evening of July 27.

The fire also destroyed a concertina fence and a generator that belonged to the SLA. The generator was supplying power to the area.

Sources said that it took several hours to bring the fire under control.

A Navy officer said that inquiries are proceeding and that the LTTE was being held responsible for the damage caused.


LTTE member killed in confrontation

A member of the Liberation Tiger was killed in a confrontation with the Sri Lankan army in Amban in Vadamaradchi east at around 10.30 a.m. this morning.

Sources in the area said that there was an indication that some SLA soldiers were also killed in the fire-fight in the Amban area.

Further details are not known.

Meanwhile six SLA soldiers were wounded when an armoured car met with an accident at Moonrumurippu in the Vanni this afternoon, said army sources


Injured PLOTE member dies in hospital

Nadarajaha Gopalakrishnan (39) alias Gopalan, a member of PLOTE who was shot and wounded by unidentified gunmen at Kovilkulam last night died at Anuradhapura hospital, said sources.

He was shot by two unidentified men who came on a motorcycle. Kannadikumar, a senior member of PLOT was killed on the spot.
