Army commandos assault TELO cadres

[TamilNet, Friday, 06 August 1999, 23:14 GMT]
Special Forces (SF) commandos of the Sri Lanka Army entered a TELO camp at Pandarikulam this morning, smashed it and assaulted eight of their members, said TELO sources. They said that two of the eight received gunshot injuries.

The commandos entered the camp when one of their vehicles hit a claymore mine in Vavuniya.

Sources said that the commandos had seen the individual who detonated the claymore mine, run in the direction of the TELO camp. They had then forced their way into the camp and assaulted the TELO cadres there.

Houses belonging to TELO members, around the camp, were also damaged by the troopers there, sources said.

One of the wounded TELO cadres has been transferred to Anuradhapura after being admitted to the Vavuniya hospital.

TELO has complained to the co-ordinating officer in Vavuniya and to the SLA regarding this incident.

SLA officials inspected camp to assess the damage caused.

Meanwhile, Vavuniya hospital sources said that two civilians were killed in the incident today.

They have been identified as Selliah Shakthivel (43) of Maharambaikulam and Murugesu Yogalingam (33) of Nelukulam.
