JHU breaks away from Rajapaksa's ruling UPFA

[TamilNet, Tuesday, 18 November 2014, 09:27 GMT]
Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU), a Sinhala extremist Buddhist monks political party on Tuesday decided to leave SL President Mahinda Rajapaksa's ruling United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) and decided to function as an ‘independent’ political party in the SL parliament, news sources in Colombo said.

Two JHU ministers ‘Patali’ Champika Ranawaka and Udaya Gammanpila have decided to resign the portfolios they now hold in the UPFA government.

Mr. Champika Ranawake holds the post of Minister of Science and Technology and Mr. Udaya Gammanpila holds a ministerial portfolio in the Western Provincial Council that is under the administration of the UPFA.

Both said at a special press briefing held on Tuesday that they would remain as JHU representatives and not as representatives of the UPFA and they would continue to function as an independent party ‘not bound’ by the UPFA.

The decision to break away from the UPFA is the ‘birthday prize’ to SL Mahinda Rajapakse, said Buddhist extremist monk Omalpe Sobitha Thera at the special briefing of the JHU held on Tuesday in Colombo.
