Government team visits Chemmani

A team of government investigators arrived in Jaffna today to examine the sites of the alleged mass graves of civilians killed by the Sri Lankan security forces at Chemmani and Ariyalai.

State counsel Yasantha Kothagoda, Forensic expert Prof. Chandrasiri Niriella and a team of officers from the Criminal Investigation Department of the Sri Lankan Police visited the areas which the SLA soldiers convicted in the rape and murder of Jaffna school girl Krishanthi Kumarasamy had indicated as the burial sites of the hundreds of civilians arrested and killed by the SLA.

The team also studied conditions in Ariyalai and Chemmani for possible exhumation work and for setting up a field laboratory in these places, sources said.
