New Delhi calls for registration of Hindi speakers in Northern Province

[TamilNet, Thursday, 02 July 2015, 15:18 GMT]
New Delhi’s Consulate General in Jaffna has asked people in the Northern Province, who could speak, read or write Hindi, to come forward to register them at the consulate before 30 July. The necessary registration form for this purpose could be found in the consulate’s website, a press release from the consulate said on Thursday. Meanwhile, New Delhi’s External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has announced the creation of a post of Joint Secretary at her ministry for the promotion of Sanskrit. Indian media reports wonder why this post at the ‘Foreign Ministry’.

Two senior cabinet ministers of New Delhi, including Ms Swaraj, participated in the 16th World Sanskrit Conference held in Bangkok last week. New Delhi partly funded the conference and has sent 250 Sanskrit scholars.

Last month New Delhi’s Consulate General in Jaffna has convened a function at Jaffna Public Library to commemorate Rabindranath Tagore’s visit to Jaffna in June 1934 and his 154th birth anniversary. The function was participated by some Tamil academics including the Jaffna University Vice Chancellor.

New Delhi’s diplomatic mission in Jaffna is officially termed in English as Consulate General of India. But in its Tamil releases in Jaffna the mission titles itself as Thu’naith Thootharakam, meaning Deputy High Commission or Assistant High Commission. The mission in Kandy is officially called Assistant High Commission.
