Two more human skeletons exhumed from Kumaratunga's killings fields in Jaffna

[TamilNet, Friday, 23 October 2015, 20:29 GMT]
The organization representing the families of forced disappeared in Jaffna has demanded on Friday credible and independent forensic analysis to be conducted without further delay on recently exhumed skeletons from Mu'l'li at Ariyaalai East, located near the genocidal killing fields of Chemma'ni. Skeletons of two females, one of them believed to be a schoolgirl allegedly raped and killed by the occupying SL military, have been recently exhumed after sand scoopers discovered the remains. The SL military had vacated from Mu'l'li two years ago after keeping the area as a ‘High Security Zone’ since 1996. Around 800 Tamil youth were forcefully disappeared between 1996 and 1999 in Jaffna peninsula under Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga's (CBK) rule.

The families of abducted Eezham Tamils under Kumaratunga's regime have been searching for their kith and kin for more than 19 years now. .

Upon the recent discovery of the human skeletons, the families of the forced disappeared have urged international actors to intervene and conduct forensic analysis independent of the SL State, Mrs Patkunam Vijayakumari representing the organisation of the missing persons in Jaffna told TamilNet.

Two of the former Tamil parliamentarians from Jaffna, Mr Suresh Premachandran and Mr Selvarajah Kajendran, have been exerting pressure on the SL Police to exhume the skeletons.

The SL police also located bunches of hair, umbrella, colour pencils and rulers from a handbag at the grave on 16 October 2015.

The eyewitnesses to the exhumation said there were signs of gunshot wounds in the skulls.

The Mu'l'li area, which remained inaccessible to the public even during the times of the ceasefire agreement, was released only two years ago.

Somaratne Rajapakse, a former Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldier, convicted in the brutal rape and murder of Jaffna schoolgirl Krishanthy Kumaraswamy, her mother, brother and a neighbour, had revealed during the investigations that he was aware of 18 grave sites in the Chemma'ni and Ariyaalai area, of which he could show the definite locations of ten and indicate the rough locations of five mass graves.

However, there were only a few skeletons were recovered and it was alleged that the SL military had managed to cover up the mass graves or had destroyed the traces from the graves.

Ms Chandrika Kumaratunga, who now heads the so-called ‘Office of the National Unity and Reconciliation’ remains tight lipped on the genocidal crimes committed under her rule.
