Sinhalese from South grab temple lands of Eezham Tamils in Ampaa’rai

[TamilNet, Monday, 15 February 2016, 23:49 GMT]
Two Sinhalese from Matara district in the Southern Province are trying to seize 8 acres of lands that belong to 50-year-old Saiva temple in Poththuvil of Ampaa'rai district using false documents, the management of the Chiththi Vinaayakar temple told TamilNet on Monday. The Sinhala extremists who are engaged in seizing lands from Tamils in the district in the Eastern province have deployed a former Sri Lankan Presidential Coordinator from Poththuvil and a former paramilitary operative as their agents, Tamil officials at the District Secretariat said verifying that the lands belong to the Hindu temple. There is a systematic pattern of genocidal land grab taking place in the district, the officials alleged citing similar cases from several other locations in the district.

The temple management of Chiththi Vinaayakar temple, which is situated at Oo'ra'ni in Poththuvil, said that two Sinhalese who came to the lands belonging to the temple were claiming ownership to the property of the temple using false documents.

In the meantime, Tamil civil sources identified a former SL Presidential Coordinator popularly known as ‘Sewa Lanka’ Majith and an ex-paramilitary operative known as Parthipan, being used by the Sinhala extremists, who were seizing the remaining lands of Eezham Tamils in the district.

Tamil suburbs of Poththuvil town and the villages Kodduk-kal, Inspector-Eattam, Oo'ra'ni, and Kanakar-kiraamam are exposed to the systematic exploitation.

Following the attempt to seize the lands of the temple on 11 February, the temple management complained to the SL Police at Poththuvil. But, the SL police was not keen in investigating the Sinhala intruders, the temple management told TamilNet.

There were more than 600 Tamil families living in the village earlier. However, targeted by the systematic project of demographic genocide, many Eezham Tamils have been chased away from their village over the years. Around 230 Tamil families still hold on to their village, they added.

Chiththi Vinaayakar temple is situated on Ampaa'rai Batticaloa Road, 7 km north of Poththuvil town.
