Eastern University staff protest against impunity for ethnic violence by Sinhala students

[TamilNet, Tuesday, 31 May 2016, 22:07 GMT]
The administration of the Eastern University has failed to implement disciplinary decisions taken against certain Sinhala students, who have assaulted Tamil lecturers and students in the recent months, a spokesperson on behalf of the union non-academic staff at the Eastern University at Vanthaa'ru-moolai in Batticaloa told TamilNet on Tuesday as the union staged a one-day boycott against the continued failure by the administration to enforce discipline. The administration is under heavy pressure from Colombo's ministers and the intelligence officers of the occupying Sinhala military in the East, the protesters said. A one-day boycott was successfully staged at Vanthaa'ru-moolai, Trincomalee campus and at Swami Vipulananda Institute of Aesthetic Studies on Tuesday.

A group of Sinhala students assaulted a Tamil student at Vanthaa'ru-moolai threatening the student to remove a photo from Tamil Genocide Day Remembrance event in May.

Tamil students from the Eastern University told TamilNet that the assault was carried out inside the premises of the university by a section of Sinhalese students, who were receiving instructions from the SL military intelligence, which has stepped up monitoring of social media interactions that originate from the occupied country of Eezham Tamils.

The ethnic-motivated violence coming from Sinhala students has accelerated since 05 December 2015, an employee at the Eastern University told TamilNet.

Meanwhile, the SL military protects the attacking Sinhalese students, the Tamil students say.

The boycotting staff were avoiding to responding to questions on military involvement.

The Sinhalese students enter the camps of the SL military immediately after carrying out the attacks, Tamil students accuse. The SL police refuses to act on the cases being filed against them. And Colombo-based mechanisms, from SL ministers to the University Grants Commission, exert pressure on the administration of the Eastern University not to punish the offending students. The administration is particularly instructed to blame both the Sinhala and Tamil students in equal numbers for the violence.

With the backing of Colombo's occupying Sinhala military and powerful ministers, sections of Sinhala students at Trincomalee campus and at the Eastern University in Vanthaa'ru-moolai have started to behave like mafia outlets.

A Sinhala student who received disciplinary action and was not permitted to sit the exams held last week, appeared at the examination hall and the administration was not able to act against him. As a result, both the academic and non-academic staff refused to extend their cooperation to conduct the examinations, which resulted in cancellation of the exams.

The Teachers Union has already demanded the administration to enforce discipline and the Union of Non-Academic Staff is determined to protest against the administration succumbing to military and political influence coming from Colombo, the spokesperson told TamilNet.

During the regime of Rajapaksa, S.B. Dissanayake was made Cabinet Minister of Higher Education. He was behind the project of promoting Sinhala students at the Eastern University. He is now SL Minister of Social Empowerment and Welfare.

Various projects run by the SL ministries in Colombo are being coordinated in a sophisticated manner to continue the structural genocide, academic sources at the Eastern University said.
