SL military brutally assaults Tamil Village Officer in Batticaloa

[TamilNet, Thursday, 02 June 2016, 06:34 GMT]
A group of five Sinhala soldiers, who were engaged in illegal tree cutting, abducted Village Officer (GS) Shanmugam Guru and brutally assaulted him at a military camp causing serious injuries to him. The incident took place at Kudumpi-malai, 63 km northwest of Batticaloa city on Wednesday. The Sinhala soldiers were in civil clothes. Two of them were having automatic rifles. When the Tamil GS officer questioned them whether they were having permit to cut trees, the group responded that they belonged to SL military and that they were having permission to cut trees. The GS officer then asked the group to document that they were in possession of such permit along with their identity. The soldiers took Mr Shanmugam Guru to the nearby military camp, where he was subjected to life-threatening assault.

The injured village officer was admitted to Vaa'laichcheanai Base Hospital.

The DS and GS officers from Koara'laippattu South boycotted their work on Thursday demanding immediate action against the soldiers who carried out the attack.

The GS area, consisting of Kudumpi-malai, Mu'raththaanai and Vaakaneari, comes under Koara'laip-pattu South (Kiraan) Divisional Secretariat and is situated 35 km west of Kiraan.

The GS officer was taken to SL military camp at Mu'ruththaanai Junction, located on Kudumpimalai - Pulipaaynthakal Road, 35 km west of Kiraan. Mu'ruththaani comes under Pearillaa-ve'li GS area.

After the genocidal onslaught in 2009, Kudumpi-malai region has been subjected to heavy militarisation and Sinhalicisation.

The so-called ‘home-guards’, a Sinhala paramilitary deployed in seizing the lands, also carry weapons and engage in illegal activities with the backing of the occupying Sinhala military.

A large area of pasturelands, seized by the Sinhala settlers in Maathava'ani and Mayilaththanai, also come under the supervision of the same GS officer.

The assault was a warning coming from the SL military that civil officials should not interfere in their activities and this is how structural genocide is being deployed under the so-called good governance of Maithiripala Sirisena (SLFP) and Ranil Wickramasinghe (UNP) regime in Colombo, the protesting Tamil officials told TamilNet on Thursday.

Similar assaults and threats by SL military on Tamil GS officers have also been reported in areas subjected to Sinhala colonisation in North in recent times.
