Vavuniya-based SLA troops were accused at an inquest today of killing a two-year old girl. However the Magistrate returned the verdict of accidental death.
Ramalingam Rasalingam, father of the slain child, alleges troops from the direction of Vavuniya were responsible for his daughter's death. Dineash Rasalingam succumbed to severe gunshot wounds to the head after she was admitted to Vavuniya hospital. The child was sleeping with her parents and an elder sister who was also wounded in the firing, Rasalingam told an inquest. He added that the incident took place around 5 a.m. after a blast in the vicinity. The inquest was held before the Acting Magistrate, S.Ramanathan, at the Vavuniya hospital. Eight people, including two children, five TELO members and a policeman, were also wounded in the incident, sources said.
