Mother succumbs after forced home delivery

A young mother died of complications after giving birth to a child in Kumaraveliyar, a hamlet in the Chenkalady Division in Batticaloa Sunday night, after the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers denied her family members to take her to the hospital.

The baby died yesterday morning on admission to the hospital.

Yoharani got labour pains during the night. Despite repeated pleas by the relatives, the SLA soldiers did not allow the relatives to take her to the hospital, sources said.

According to relatives the SLA soldiers had ordered them not to come out of the house.

The mother had to give birth at home and died later of complications, the relatives said.

Mrs.Vinayakamoorthy Yoharani is 27 years old and is a mother of four.
