SL military seizes northernmost point of Tamil country for Sinhalicisaton of tourism

The occupying Sinhala military has transformed the northernmost point of the country of Eezham Tamils into a military-operated tourist attraction for Sinhala tourists from the South. It was also making a mockery of the ‘unity in diversity’ slogan while in practice demonstrating the attitude of transforming everything into ‘Sinhala uniformity’ across the island from the southernmost Dondra point in the Sinhala South to Chakkoadai cape in the Tamil North. The Chief Minister of Northern Provincial Council, Justice C.V. Wigneswaran, is currently having the responsibility of tourism ministry in the democratically elected Northern Provincial Council.

The area of tourism is a subject of the Concurrent List, which means that the NPC could exercise its power by passing a statute after consulting the SL Parliament for its opinion.
However, the SL military, which kept the Chakkoadai cape occupied as a military zone since 1996 is now transforming it officially as a tourist location under its control without allowing the democratic NPC to shape the outlook of tourism in the North.
Chakkoaddai point was held as a military zone since it was captured by the SL military in 1996
The SL military was also demonstrating the ‘foremost place to Buddhism’ clause of the Sinhala Buddhist ‘Sri Lanka’ by giving prominence to Kandyan Sinhala Perahara dancers at the opening ceremony.
Major General Darshana Hettiarachchi, the Jaffna Commander of the SL military, declared open the site as a military-run tourist centre on 12 February.
He was also taking photos with military personnel in front of the board where he was demonstrating the ‘uniformity’ of Sinhala military personnel as the diversity and the strength of ‘Sri Lanka’.
Commenting on the move, Sivakumar Kanthavanam, the secretary of Inparuddi Fisheries Society in the area told TamilNet that the SL military was occupying several coastal spots while the fisher societies were struggling without jetties.
If the SL military has any respect for diversity and unity, then the first thing it should do is allow the people of the locality to access their coast and the sea, he further commented.
“The people uprooted from Valikaamam North, and Valikaamam East are also here, and the fishing societies have to clash with each other to get access to the limited number of jetties,” he said.
