SL Police take sides, Sinhala tipper drivers causing fatal accidents escape legal action

The police of occupying Colombo is protecting the Sinhala vehicle owners and drivers of the tipper vehicles that are involved in fatal accidents in Batticaloa district, legal sources representing the victim families, said observing a pattern involving several accidents in the East. A speeding tipper vehicle, which was transporting sand from Batticaloa to Polonnaruwa claimed the life of a 26-year-old Tamil man in the early hours of 25 February. Another victim sustained severe injuries. But, the Sinhala driver hailing from SL President's home district of Polonnaruwa has managed to evade legal action with the help of the police of the occupying unitary State. Another similar accident claimed the life of a 62-year-old former Village Officer at Kathira-ve'li on the following day.
Raveendradeva Sanjeyanthakanth was the Tamil victim who died on the spot at Chanthi-ve'li on Sunday. He was riding a motorbike from Aaraip-pattai (Aaraiyampathi) to Trincomalee. On Monday, another tipper truck transporting sand claimed the life of 62-year-old K. Singaravel, a former village officer and a father of seven at Kathirave'li. He was riding a bicycle. The Sinhala driver from the tipper vehicle vanished from the site of the accident into the nearby post of the occupying SL military. The tipper vehicle was transporting sand from Trincomalee to Polonnaruwa through Vaakarai. The Sinhala police failed to take action against the driver from Polonnaruwa also in that case. The angered public set fire to the tipper vehicle. If a similar accident takes place in a Sinhala area and the driver was a Tamil or Muslim, it would have triggered off ethnic backlash and racism against their community, the lawyers, who didn't wish to be named, commented. Tipper vehicle owners from South are involved in large-scale scooping of sand from Tamil areas in the North-East with the backing of the occupying Sinhala military and the police. In the meantime, Tamil youth who voice for the protection of the environment from sand scooping have been assassinated in the North after 2009. Also, the Tamils who compete in the illegal sand scooping business with the Sinhalese and fail to collaborate with the SL police and the military in sharing the income have been gunned down by the Police reportedly with an intent to ‘teach a lesson’. The villagers who burnt tires and reacted against the injustice by the SL Police have been systematically harassed through wanton search operations in which notorious STF personnel are deployed
