A youth who had been detained at the PLOTE's 'Malar Maalihai' (Flower Palace) detention camp at Rambaikulama in Vavuniya escaped last night and surrendered to the Police at a nearby sentry point said sources.
The youth, Nadesapillai Ramalingam (19), has told the police that his hands were tied behind his back and his legs chained to a two feet long rail bar while he was detained. However, he managed to escape when the PLOTE cadres had gone to bring food to another detainee after relaxing his hands, the youth had told. He surrendered to the police carrying the rail bar. | The funeral of PLOTE's military wing leader, Manikkamdasan was held in Vavuniya on Monday. Ramalingam is from Cheddikulam in Vavuniya district. He was arrested a month ago while he had gone to visit his relatives at Sithambarapuram welfare centre about 10 km. south east of Vavuniya town. PLOTE cadres had told him that they wanted to get information from him and detained him. Police said that he would be handed over to his relatives after inquiries. Meanwhile the Sri Lanka Army arrested yesterday 12 PLOTE cadres who were moving around with weapons near the group's camp at Kovilkulam 2 km. South east of Vavuniya town, said sources. The SLA confiscated their weapons. Seven of them were later released.
