Colombo resorts to TID-threats against mothers of enforced disappeared
[TamilNet, Tuesday, 15 May 2018, 19:23 GMT]
The Terrorist Investigation Division of the police of the occupying Colombo has re-introduced interrogation threats against the mothers of enforced disappeared Tamils in the recent days, informed rights activists in Vavuniyaa told TamilNet on Tuesday. A mother from Vavuniyaa, who has been at the forefront in mobilising protests, which also criticised the so-called ‘Office for Missing Persons’ (OMP) as an eyewash, was recently summoned to the so-called 4th floor. The mother has been reluctant to talk to media about the threat, the source further said.
Irked by the consistent protests against the OMP which has been rejected by Tamils, the unitary State of genocidal Sri Lanka is threatening the people citing links with diaspora activists outside the island. The threat also follows increased surveillance against Community Based Organisations through the so-called Financial Intelligence Unit of the Central Bank of the unitary State and the SL ministries seeking to control the CBOs and local Non-Governmental Organisations. Former LTTE members have been consistently harassed by the intelligence divisions of the SL military, police and the navy for a long time. On Saturday, the families of enforced disappeared refused to address the OMP closed-door sittings in Mannaar and demanded the OMP commissioners to register what they had to say transparently in the presence of journalists and grassroots activists. The result became an outright criticism on the OMP and other commissions of the SL State in the past. At the same time, protesters mobilised in front of the District Secretariat in Mannaar. The enforced disappeared said the SL State was not even prepared to change the name of the commission from Office of Missing Persons to Office of Enforced Disappeared.
