The United National Party (UNP) has allocated more than 10% of houses provided to resettling people in Mullaiththeevu district to Sinhala colonisers in Ma'nal-aa'ru, which is Sinhalicised into Weli-Oya and is functioning as a separate division within the district, civil sources at the District Secretariat said. The houses have been provided within the past three years, the sources further said.
The UNP has been operating the SL Ministry of Resettlement with a Colombo-based Tamil minister D.M. Swaminathan and the SL Ministry of Housing and Construction, which is led by Sajith Premadasa, who is the son of late SL President Ranatunga Premadasa. Premadasa's ministry has been putting up housing scheme with model villages including all the infrastructure needed to bring 1,000 new colonisers. In the meantime, Swaminathan's ministry was also allocating houses intended for resettling war-affected Tamils to Sinhala colonisers in the division. The UNP was also competing with Mahinda Rajapaksa's SLPF Maithiripala Sirisena's SLFP in erecting Sinhala Theravada Buddhist temples in a hostile manner in the North-East.
