SL State-run sea cucumber farming becomes major threat to Tamil fishers of North

[TamilNet, Tuesday, 14 May 2019, 20:58 GMT]
The occupying unitary state of genocidal Sri Lanka is scheming to shrink the coastal fishing access to Eezham Tamil fishers in the islets and along the west coast of Vanni, where the resettled Tamils are already struggling with limited access to their coastal belt due to militarization and other activities from the South. Several new locations have been identified by the SL state-run National Aquaculture Development Authority (NAQDA) and the SL National Aquatic Resources Research And Development Agency (NARA), informed sources at Jaffna District Secretariat told TamilNet on Tuesday.

Sea Cucumber sites in North

A high-level meeting was held on 11 May to woo private investors to operate farms in Jaffna peninsula.

No one consumes sea cucumbers in the island, and the Tamils engaged in the fishing industry in the North are not interested in the export business. The companies in the South export sea cucumbers to Singapore, Hong Kong, China and Taiwan.

Only five of the total twenty-five investors were from the North. Even those who attended the investment meeting were agents to export-businesses based in the South, the sources said.

The SL State would be limiting the sea access to local Tamil fishers as well as bringing more Sinhala fishers from South to engage in Sea Cucumber fishing and farming.

The occupying Sinhala Navy is also engaged in the business.

Several violent clashes have been reported between the native fishermen and the intruders in Vadamaraadchi East in recent times.

The local fishers are concerned about the ecological and environmental consequences as the move would also increase illegal poaching of sea cucumbers by the intruding fishermen from the South.
