New PLOTE military leader held
[TamilNet, Friday, 17 September 1999, 12:19 GMT]
Hari Babu, the leader of the military wing of the People's Liberation Organisation of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE) was arrested by the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) yesterday evening. He has been handed over to the Terrorist Investigation Department (TID), said sources.
The reason for his arrest is not known. Hari Babu became the military wing leader of the group after the former leader, Manikkadasan, was killed in a claymore mine blast at the PLOTE camp in Vavuniya on September 2. Hari Babu was Assistant to Manikkadasan. Meanwhile reports from Vavuniya say the SLA has begun raiding PLOTE camps in Rambaikulam a suburb, about a km east of Vavuniya town, to recover weapons. The area is considered a stronghold of the paramilitary organisation, which operates alongside the SLA in operations against the Liberation Tigers.
