SL authorities plan to seize 50 acres as ‘Buddha Pooja Boomi’ in Thennai-maravadi

[TamilNet, Sunday, 09 June 2019, 20:39 GMT]
Tamil civil sources at Kuchchave'li said the controversial monk Galgamuwa Sandhabodhi thero has been harassing the Divisional Secretariat to demarcate fifty acres of lands at the temple site of Eezham Tamils along the strategic border between the Northern and Eastern provinces. The monk has claimed that the properties were needed to generate income for a future Buddhist temple. SL Archaeology Department and the occupying Sinhala military are planning to erect a Sinhala Buddhist temple at the locality after destroying the Hindu temple, the sources further said.

The Eastern Provincial Land Commissioner, who is a Sinhalese, was exerting pressure on the Divisional Secretary of Kuchchave'li to collaborate with the thero.

Meanwhile, the SL Survey Department and the Provincial Land Commissioner are planning to survey the lands.

Instead of reaching the locality through a land-route, they are planning to enter the location by boats to avoid possible protest by the villagers, the sources further revealed.

In the meantime, SL traffic police confronted a Tamil landowner, Kanagasabai Kuganathan, who was clearing his lands near the base of the Kanthasaami-hill on Wednesday.

The policemen told Mr Kuganathan to stay away from the lands and said the lands belonged to the SL Archaeology Department. The landowner categorically stated that he was in possession of documents to prove his ownership to the land and refused to vacate the place. He told the traffic policemen that he could come to the Police station with the necessary evidence to prove his ownership. Then the policemen left the area saying it was not required, Mr Kuanathan said.

The structures of the destroyed Murukan temple at Kanthasaami-malai are seen in the photos below:
