Colombo to increase trade ties with Iran

Iran's Ambassador to Colombo, Hashem Ashjazadeh, has told the Governor-General of Iran’s East Azarbaijan Province that the present government in the island is being run by “popular government,” which was seeking “more interaction with the Islamic Republic of Iran,” according to a report by IRNA, the official news agency of Iran on Wednesday.

The Iranian Ambassador was urging the East Azarbaijan provincial Governor-General to dispatch economic and trade delegations of the province to make presentations in the markets in the island to identify its capacities and supply parts of its needs.

Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani met his Sri Lankan counterpart in May 2018 which was considered a new chapter in bilateral ties, the news report further stated.

In the meantime, Russian Defense Minister Army General Sergei Shoigu has chosen the island as the venue for one of the contests of its ‘International Army Games’ for the first time, the Russian news agency, TASS, reported on Friday.

"One of the contests, Field Kitchen, will be hosted by Sri Lanka for the first time," the defence minister has commented. Russia's sixth Army international Games will be held from August 23 to September 05, 2020.
