Eezham Tamils in North-East mark Feb 04 as Black Day

Eezham Tamils in the occupied Tamil Eelam also this year didn't show interest in the so-called Independence Day on Tuesday. As an occupied nation of people, they not only remained aloof from the celebrations of hoisting the SL national flag or getting involved in the anthem of the occupying unitary state of genocidal Sri Lanka but marked the day as Black Day. Only the occupying SL military was celebrating the day. Grassroots activists, Tamil parliamentarians and political activists joined the Black Day protests staged by the kith and kin of persons subjected to enforced disappearance at the hands of the occupying SL military. Black Day protests were held in Ki'linochchi, Batticaloa and Trincomalee with significant participation.

The occupying Sinhala military and police removed the black flags and banners that the Tamil student community had put up at the entrance to the University of Jaffna.

The Jaffna University administration was under pressure to block the students from entering the premises after the SL military removed the banners and the black flags.

The Eezham Tamils didn't bother whether the SL anthem was being sung in Sinhala or Tamil in the North and East as they had lost sentimental attachments to it long ago.

The SL Lion flags were hoisted, and the SL anthem was played, as a procedural formality at the SL government secretariats in the North and East.

A non-vocal anthem was played at the Northern Provincial Council.

However, in the South, the language issue was taken seriously by the Tamil-speaking minority politicians, such as former SL Minister Mano Ganesan.

Some activists, who believed in the deceptive transitional justice discourse, expressed their protest by singing the Tamil version of the SL anthem opposing the 'Sinhala-Only' attitude of the Sinhala exclusivist establishment.

SL President Gotabaya Rajapaksa's chauvinistic Sinhala establishment was steadfastly rejecting Tamil SL anthem to be used at the official ceremony, which was held at the Galle Face.
