Officials appeal for food[TamilNet, Monday, 27 September 1999, 18:34 GMT]The Government Agents of Vavuniya, Mullaithivu and Kilinochchi have made a request to Sri Lanka Army (SLA) officials in Vavuniya to make arrangements to dispatch the required quantity of relief food items to the displaced population in the areas held by the LTTE, said sources. The request was made at the meeting held at the Security Forces Head Quarters in Vavuniya this morning. K.Ganesh the Government Agent of Vavuniya and the Deputy Commissioner General of Essential Services who is the co-ordinator for the distribution of relief food items to the Vanni, Ilayathamby Aiyathurai the Government Agent of Kilinochchi and S.Sunderam the Government Agent of Mullaithivu, S.Ragunathapillai the Additional Government Agent in Vavuniya, Brigadier K.Piyasoma the Chief Co-ordinator of the Civil Affairs in the Vanni region, Col.V.K.B.Weerakoon the Population Resource Controller attended the meeting. The civil officials pointed out to the military officials that 5 kg of rice, 4 kg of wheat flour 1.5 kg of sugar and a half a kilo dhall are required for a person for a month and this amount of foodstuff should be transported during the particular month. The officials also discussed the ways and means of transporting fertiliser and other inputs to meet the needs of the farmers. Sources said that however no decisions were made at today's meeting. Officials said the requirements and requests will be referred to Major General Vasantha Perera, the recently appointed Commander for the Vanni region, for the final decisions.
