Priest wins rights case

The Attorney General (AG) has given approval for the release of the Hindu Priest of the Muneeswaram Temple Balasubramaniam Iyer Srinivasa Sarma and his wife Annapoorani who were taken into custody by the police on June 11,1999.

The Attorney General acting under section 54(1) of the Emergency Regulation sent this release order to the Chilaw Magistrate.

Earlier, the detainees had filed a Fundamental Rights application in the Supreme Court through their counsel Gowry Shankari Thavarasa. The application was supported by Attorney-at-Law P.Sivaloganathen.

Following the submission by the counsel, Supreme Court directed the AG to consider the appeal by the detainees.
