Held GA files rights case

The Mannar Government Agent, Saveriyan Mariathasan Cruz Monday filed a Fundamental Rights application in the Supreme Court, challenging his detention. The case was filed through his Counsel, Gowry Shankary Thavarasa.

Mr. Cruz has been detained since September 4, 1999, at the Mount Lavinia Police Station.

The petition stated, that on August 27, 1999 the police arrested driver Anthony Thas at Mannar and took him to Mount Lavinia Police Station.

Thereafter he was brought to Mannar on August 30.

The police say they recovered explosives from his office and showed them to the petitioner who was surprised.

He was later summoned to the Mount Lavinia Police Station where he was detained. He told the police that he had to face an interview on September 8, 1999. The police in civil clothing escorted the Petitioner for his interview.

He says he was detained wrongly.
