Shooting leads to search operation in Batticaloa

Police said a LTTE member fired at one of its post at Loyds Avenue in the Batticaloa town this morning around 10.15 a.m. However there were no casualties the Police added.
Police retaliated by firing at the youth, but he had managed to escape police sources said. The Sri Lanka Army (SLA) cordoned off Koddaimunai and Thaandavanveli area in the town and conducted a search operation, sources in Batticaloa said. A police officer told TamilNet that a youth who was hiding in a house at Thomas Avenue was shot dead during the search operation. His body has been handed over to the Batticaloa hospital. The police claimed the youth was a member of the Liberation Tigers and that they recovered a pistol from him. At least 15 people, including the inmates of the house were arrested during the search operation which lasted till 1.30 p.m.. They have been detained for further questioning, sources said.
