About 50 Tamils working at a rice-mill in Akkaraipattu in the Ampara district were arrested during a search operation by the Sri Lankan Police yesterday evening, sources said.
The police said the search operation was conducted after they had received information that the Liberation Tigers have infiltrated the area. Meanwhile 3 Tamil fishermen were arrested by the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) at Raalkuli, a fishing hamlet in Muttur, south of Trincomalee, yesterday morning around 7.00 a.m. They were fishing about 100 metres from the shore when SNL personnel who came in a boat arrested them, according to witnesses. Sources said it is not known where they are being held. The names of two of the fishermen are Nakappan Sivapatham (49) and Joyel Pathmanathan.
