Displaced warned about landmines

Ms. Penny Brune, the Programme Officer of the UNICEF, visited Vavuniya and Mannar on a three days fact finding mission to remove the land mines in areas where displaced people are resettled in Vavuniya district, government officials said.

Ms. Brune met Mr. S. Ragunathapillai the Additional Government Agent, Mrs. V. Ketheeswaran the Project Director of Rehabilitation and Reconstruction in Vavuniya district, Major Tilakaratne and other officials from the NGO's RDF and FORUT.

She will be visiting Mannar district as well in this connection and meet the government and NGO officials there, the Additional Government Agent said.

Officials said that under the new project of the UNICEF, the resettled displaced villagers would be warned of the dangers of the land mines. Ways and means to avoid the dangers of the land mines will be taught to them they added.
