A bomb exploded in front the residence of a police officer near the Thimilaithivu police post, in the Batticaloa Municipal area last night. However no damages were reported, sources said.
The bomb went off in the high security area where the Sri Lanka Army (SLA), Air Force and police have their camps. Paramilitary groups PLOTE and Razeek also have their camps in the area. SLA troops and police cordoned off the area and conducted a search operation following the blast. Razeek group cadres were also seen with the security forces during the search operation, residents said. Also yesterday the Liberation Tigers fired long range mortars at the SLA's 23-2 brigade head quarters situated at the Valaichenai Paper Mill, about 32 km. north of Batticaloa. Sources said three shells were fired at the camp. SLA sources said there were no damages to them. The SLA retaliated by firing shells towards LTTE held areas, the sources added.
