Students, teachers and principals in the North-Eastern Province attended schools today with black bands pinned on their dress, in remembrance of those killed in the Madhu Church artillery attack recently.
They were responding to an appeal made by the Ceylon Tamil Teachers Union (CTTU) urging them to observe a day of mourning in remembrance of those killed in Madhu Church and to press the government to stop all aerial and artillery attacks on places of worships, schools, hospitals and residential areas in the north east. The General Secretary of the CTTU, Mr.T.Mahasivam, said there was an overwhelming response in the northern Jaffna peninsula, and the eastern Districts of Batticaloa and Trincomalee. Meanwhile the Catholic Church, the Anglican Mission, the Church of South-India and the Methodist Mission in the Batticaloa District have organised a peace march and special prayers on Sunday, December 5, protesting against the attack on Madhu Church, said sources Church said sources.
