The house of Mr. M. A. (Myown) Mustapha, a leading citizen in Kalmunai and a local leader of the United National Party (UNP) was thoroughly searched by the Police this morning, relatives said.
Police sources said that his house was searched on a complaint made by a powerful politician. The search started at about 4 a.m. in the morning and continued for over three hours. Mr. Myown Mustapha was earlier in the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) as its national organiser. Recently, he left the SLMC and joined the UNP and is now actively campaigning for the main opposition Presidential Candidate, Ranil Wickremasinghe. Local political sources said the purpose of the search was to recover materials against the government. But nothing incriminating Mr. Mustapha was recovered during the search, police sources said. Mr. Mustapha was in his home at that time of the search, relatives said. Mr. Mustapha said that his political opponents were behind this search. They were now scared that the UNP Presidential candidate was gaining ground in Kalmunai. He could not be intimidated any forces, he added.
