Rebel UNP MPs file case
[TamilNet, Monday, 13 December 1999, 21:44 GMT]
The Supreme Court today issued notice on Sri Lanka’s main opposition United National Party (UNP) Chairman Karu Jayasuriya and General Secretary Gamini Athukorala in respect of the application made by four Parliamentarians Sarath Amunugama Nantha Mathew, Wijepala Mendis and Susil Munasinghe challenging their expulsion from the Party.
The application was supported by Attorneys at law E.D.Wickremanayake, Gomin Dayasiri and Nigel Hetch instructed by U.Abdul Nazim. Mr.Wickremanayake submitted that his clients were not asked to show any cause, they had not been given an opportunity to explain before being expelled from party. This, according to the applicants, was unreasonable and unfair. The rules of natural justice have not been followed by the UNP, they said.
