Round up in Batticaloa town

[TamilNet, Monday, 08 December 1997, 23:59 GMT]
The Batticaloa market was rounded up last evening around 4.30 p.m. by the Sri Lankan Police and its much feared Counter Subversive Unit (CSU).

Shoppers and vendors in the market which is behind the large Police quarters along with people living in the immediate neighbourhood were detained within the market premises and screened by the CSU for more than two hours said residents.

Six youth were arrested and taken to the dreaded Forest Dept. camp of the CSU on Pioneer Road in the Batticaloa town. They are still being held there.

Meanwhile, in Kannankikiramam, one of Valaichenai's war ravaged satellite villages, a 15 year old student called K. Pirabaharan was wound in the leg when the SLA from the nearby Paythalali camp shot at random while on a route clearing patrol in the area.

The boy has been admitted to the Valaichenai hospital.

Tamil civilians in Valaichenai, 21 miles north of Batticaloa town, and its surrounding villages and refugee camps are subjected to arrest, detention and indiscriminate shooting and shelling every day.
