MP urges inquiry into shootings

[TamilNet, Monday, 24 January 2000, 19:17 GMT]
The Leader of the Parliamentary Group of the Tamil United Liberation Front, Mr.Joseph Pararajasinghan has appealed to the President to order an impartial inquiry into the killing of a 10-year-old girl, Sellathamby Pushpalatha, and a 14-year-old boy, Vijeyan, by the SLA at Morakoddanchenai, a village 20 km north of Batticaloa.

Mr Pararajasingham, who is also the MP of the Batticaloa district, in a letter to the President has pointed out that the two teenagers died due to the indiscriminate shooting by the SLA after a firefight.

SLA personnel had asked the civilians in the vicinity to shelter in a boutique. Thereafter, the army had started firing indiscriminately resulting in the deaths of two students.

Two other civilians, Shanmukarajah and Pakyarajah, were seriously wounded.

Mr Pararajasingham has requested the President to take steps to punish the soldiers and also to take steps to prevent such random acts taking place in the future.

In another letter, the MP asked the Chairman Of the Anti Harassment Committee to open an inquiry in the killings.
