Massacre accused shot dead

One of the accused in the Tampalakamam-Barathipuram massacre was shot dead by unidentified gunmen last Monday night, Kantalai Police said. In the Tampalakamam massacre, eight Tamil civilians, including students, were killed by police personnel and home guards attached to a checkpoint close to the village.

Several police personnel and home guards have been charged in cases connected with the Tampalakamam massacre.

The non-summary proceedings in these cases are yet to commence in the Trincomalee Magistrate's Court.

Chandraratna Bandara, a home guard, on the day of incident was at his house at 99th colony with his wife and children. Some unidentified persons entered his house and asked him to accompany them and he obliged.

Shortly afterwards gunshots were heard. Later, neighbors found the dead body of Chandraratna Bandara.

In the autopsy held by the District Medical Officer, nine gunshot injuries were found on the chest of the deceased.

The inquest into this murder is to be held on Monday by the Acting Magistrate Mr.Hajju Mohamed.
