The former Opposition Leader of the dissolved North East Provincial Council Mr.M.H.Segu Issadeen was sworn in as a new Member of Parliament in the National List of the United National Party today.
He was one of the founder members of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC), a constituent of the ruling People's Alliance (PA). He later left the SLMC and formed a new party called Sri Lanka Muslim Party ('Muslim Katchi'). During the last presidential election held in December 1999, Mr. Issadeen addressed several meetings in the Ampara district in support of Mr. Ranil Wickremasinghe, the UNP candidate. Mr. Issadeen is an Attorney-at-Law. He is also a Tamil poet and writer. While Issadeen's supporters in Akkaraipattu celebrated his appointment as an MP, it has created some dissension among Muslim supporters of the UNP in the Ampara district sources said.
