Soldiers on public transport pose danger

[TamilNet, Thursday, 17 February 2000, 11:02 GMT]
The Citizen's Committee in Mannar has brought to the attention of the representatives of the International Red Cross Committee (ICRC) the problems faced by civilians when the government troops travel in public transport services. The Citizen's Committee blames the troops for using the civilians as shields and told the ICRC that civilians will get affected when the troops came under attack.

The Citizen's Committee has appealed to the ICRC to take necessary measures to prevent troops using public transport services for their transport.

Meanwhile an employee of the Mannar District Courts has been arrested by the Police said sources. He was arrested at Piramanalan Kulam road, while returning to Mannar after visiting his parents in Mullaithivu.

Nadarajah Ketheeswaran, 29, is employed as a short-hand-writer in the courts. The matter has been brought to the notice of the Mannar District Courts judge, Mr. M. Ilancheliyan. Ketheeswaran is held in a transit camp at Gods-Shed road.

Sources said Ketheswaran had obtained permission from the authorities before leaving for Mullaithivu, which is held by the Liberation Tigers.
