A Razeek Group cadre (an auxiliary force of the Sri Lanka Army) was killed in a grenade attack at Sunkaankerny, about 30 km. north of Batticaloa, around 5.15 p.m. yesterday evening.
He was identified as N. Chandran, 34, alias Arulappu, of Kinaiyadi, in Valaichenai.
The Razeek cadre who had gone home on vacation from Batticaloa, was seen extorting money and harassing people in the Valaichenai area yesterday morning. He was killed while going home in the evening, under the influence of alcohol.
Chandran was arrested by the Liberation Tigers last year, but he managed to escape, sources said.
His body was handed to the Valaichenai hospital this morning. Hospital sources said no one has come to collect the body.
In a separate incident, a former member of the Razeek Group, Sellathurai Rajenthiran, 24, (alias Giri) was shot and killed at Mandoor, 30 km. south of Batticaloa, around 8.30 p.m. yesterday.
He was killed at his house, which is about 200 meters from a Special Task Force (STF) camp. The STF troops searched the area following the incident. However, no one was arrested, sources said. His body was taken to Kaluwanchikudy hospital, where an inquest was held.
Rajenthiran married for second time when his wife went abroad. He had threatened to kill her after she returned to Sri Lanka, and a police case is pending against him in the Batticaloa courts in this regard.
Rajenthiran had gone through a training program at the SLA's Infantry Training School in Minneriya, west of Batticaloa.
