Skeletal remains found

[TamilNet, Monday, 13 March 2000, 14:10 GMT]
A human skull and an arm bone were recovered from a sewage pit in a house at Thirunakar in Kilinochchi last Wednesday, said reports from the Vanni. The skeletal remains were handed over to the Kilinochchi hospital.

The remains are believed to be of a woman, said Dr.Vigneswaran, District Medical Officer, Kilinochchi.

'Uthayan', a Tamil daily published in Jaffna, reported last week that eight skeletons were recovered from a sewage-pit in Uthyanakar, Kilinochchi. The remains were found when the owners were cleaning the compound. Jewelry was also found in the pit, the paper reported.

The skeletons are believed to the remains of people who had gone to visit relatives in Kilinochchi, when the SLA was in control of the town, and were latter reported 'missing', the paper said.

Sri Lanka Army soldiers took control of Kilinochchi by operation Sath Jaya in August 1996. The town was re-captured by the Liberation Tigers in October 1998.
