[TamilNet, Sunday, 14 December 1997, 23:59 GMT]
The Tamil political prisoners in Kalutura prison who went on a fast unto death refused to give up their protest when members of the Tamil parties met them today in an attempt to persuade them to stop their fast.

Mr. Chandrakumar, MP of the EPDP, Mr. S. Selvarajah, Mr. K. Thuraisingham, both TULF MPs for Batticaloa, Mr. Tharmalingam Sitharthan MP of PLOTE visited the Tamil political prisoners.

The Tamil parties had discussions with political prisoners, the commissioner general of prisons, commissioner of prisons and an official for the Attorney General dept., who is also in charge of handling the cases of the Tamil political prisoners, Gamage Jeyalath.

No decisions were reached at discussions, said the Tamil parties.

Meanwhile Prof. Peiris, Sri Lanka's minister for Constitutional Affairs, is to hold a conference with prison authorities and justice ministry officials about the Kalutara problem.

The Tamil political prisoners had stated that although various Tamil parties had promised to sort out their problems on several earlier occasions, nothing had been done so far.
