Due to a confrontation between the Sri Lanka Navy and the Liberation Tigers in the seas of Mullaitivu, in the north-east of the island, the naval authorities suspended the sailing of the vessel 'City of Trinco' to Jaffna from Trincomalee Thursday morning. Informed sources said a SLN gunboat was damaged in the confrontation that took place on Wednesday night.
The Sri Lanka Navy informed the Divisional Secretariat Thursday morning that until further notice, the vessel 'City of Trinco' would not leave Trincomalee port. The vessel City of Trinco arrived in Trincomalee harbour on Wednesday morning with 351 civilian passengers. The SLN had informed the Divisional Secretariat Wednesday evening that the vessel would leave Trincomalee Thursday and to make arrangements to transport passengers to Ceylon Jetty where the vessel is anchored. Hundreds of passengers who came to DS office with bag and baggage were disappointed by the last minute cancellation.
