Six members of the People's Liberation Organisation of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE), who were arrested after a shoot-out with the police in Vavuniya on Tuesday, were remanded till 26 June by the District Judge of Vavuniya, Mrs.K.Sivapathasunderam.
The PLOTE cadres were charged with preventing policemen at a sentry post from carrying out their duty. The police told the courts today that the PLOTE cadres pointed a pistol at the police officer in-charge of the sentry at Kulumaattu junction, about 2.5 kilometers west of Vavuniya. The police asked the court to remand the PLOTE cadres as they had not completed investigations. The police further told the courts that they have confiscated 6 guns, including two pistols, and the jeep in which the PLOTE cadres were travelling. The remanded PLOTE cadres were identified as Sivan Kathiravelu, Thangavelu Puvaneswaran, Jeyarajah Jegan, Sathiyaseelan Suisalan, Muththulingam Ganesarasa and Muththukaruppan Ganesan. Meanwhile another PLOTE cadre who was injured in cross-fire and admitted to the Vavuniya hospital was sent home yesterday evening, PLOTE sources said. The arrests follow an incident on Tuesday, when a verbal altercation led to a shoot out. The jeep the PLOTE cadres were travelling in was smashed in the incident and the men arrested. Attempts by PLOTE to get it's members released have so far been unsuccessful, according to sources in Vavuniya.
