The Liberation Tigers observed Black Tiger day in all parts of the Vanni on Wednesday, the Voice of Tigers said in its night news broadcast. The radio said special floats to commemorate the 188 black Tigers who had died so far in "sea and land attacks" took part in the processions and functions that had been organised to mark the day in many parts of the Vanni.
Meanwhile, sources in the eastern province said that the Liberation Tigers had also arranged meetings and functions in areas controlled by them in Mutur and Batticaloa. The Black Tigers are an elite squad of the organisation. They are responsible for the black operations run by the Liberation Tigers. The first suicide attack by the Black Tigers was conducted on 5 July 1987, when Capt. Miller drove an explosive laden truck into a Sri Lanka army camp in Nelliyadi in Jaffna.
