Sri Lankan police arrested S.Thiyakarasa, a lecturer at Batticaloa Technical College and Sivagnanam Ahileswaran, the Paddiruppu Zonal Director of the Educational Department, on Tuesday. The students of the Technical College in the eastern town boycotted their classes and picketed in front of the college today, protesting against the arrest of the lecturer inside the college premises.

The students said the police entered the college without obtaining permission from the principal and arrested the lecturer.

The Zonal Director, Ahileswaran is a former chairman of the Paddipalai Pradeshiya Sabha (local council).

A special police team which came from the hill town of Kandy made the arrests on information given by two detainees said sources.

The matter has brought to the notice of Joseph Pararajasingham, a MP for Batticaloa District.
