Parties flock to contest Vanni seats

Twelve political parties and independent groups are to field nominations in the Vanni Electoral District in the forthcoming elections to the Sri Lankan Parliament scheduled to be held on 10th of October.
Former Chief Minister of the North-east Provincial Council, Varatharaja Perumal's faction of the Eelam People's Revolutionary Front (EPRLF) is to file nominations as an independent group in the northern Districts of Vanni and Jaffna, while it will contest under the ruling PA's ticket in the Eastern Districts sources said. Other registered political parties preparing to contest in the Vanni District are: United National Party (UNP), Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF), Citizen's Front, People's Alliance (PA), People Liberation Organisation of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE), Tamil Eelam Liberation Organisation (TELO), Suresh Premachandran's faction of the EPRLF, Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC), Eelam People's Democratic Party (EPDP) and an independent group led by Tananjeyan, said sources at the Election Commissioners Offices in Vavuniya. Although Nominations are being accepted between 28th of August and 4th of September, most of the parties are expected to file their nominations on the 1st of September, the sources said.
