The Leader of the United National Party Ranil Wickremasinghe has said that he would appoint a commission to probe the mysterious death in a helicopter crash last month of Mr.M.H.M.Ashraff, founder president of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress, if he is elected to power.
He gave this assurance when he addressed an election rally at Sainthamaruthu in support of the UNP candidates contesting the Ampara district. He said that no proper investigation is conducted into the air crash that took the lives of several persons including Mr.Ashraff. He added that a relative of Ashraff's family would be included in the Commission of Inquiry to probe the mysterious air crash. Mr.Ranil Wickremasinghe said that a special development program would be launched to develop the eastern province under the future UNP government. Dr.S.Thayanandarajah, lead candidate in the TULF list for the Ampara district, which was later rejected by the Court of Appeal for not properly attested by a Justice of Peace, was also seen seated on the stage with Mr.Ranil Wickremasinghe. Mr.Myown Mustapha, one of the UNP candidates contesting the Ampara district presided.
