Grenade attacks in Jaffna

Three members of the Eelam People's Democratic Party (EPDP), a pro-government ex-militant group were seriously wounded in a grenade attack in Jaffna. The attack took place between Nachchimarakoviladi and Poonarimarathady on the Jaffna-Kankesanthurai road, about 4 km. off north of Jaffna town around 12.30 p.m. Thursday.
The EPDP cadres were engaged in electioneering in a three- wheeler when a grenade was lobbed at them by unidentified persons Tamilnet correspondent in Jaffna said. The three-wheeler was also damaged. The wounded were identified as: Tharmakulasingham Tharmaseelan(21), Kanagasingham Theepan(19) and S.Gnanaseelan (21). They were admitted to the Jaffna Teaching Hospital. Sri Lanka Army soldiers cordoned the area and conducted a search operation folloing the grenade attack. In a separate incident, 3 civilians were wounded when unidentified men lobbed a grenade at an army vehicle near the offices of Uthayan, a Tamil daily at Kasthuriyar road around 5.30 p.m. Thursday. The wounded were identified as Ponniah Jeyakanthan, Sinnarasa Anushatha and Mathinayaki. They were admitted to the Jaffna Teaching Hospital.
