Police shelling kills one

A civilian was killed and ten houses were damaged when police fired shells towards Karuwankerny, a hamlet in Valaichenai, 32 km. north of Batticaloa, Sunday night, said sources.

The sources said the police opened up shelling after gun-shots were fired at the police station in Valaichenai around 8.30 p.m. Sunday.

In a separate incident, a Sri Lanka Army soldier was killed and another wounded when the Liberation Tigers attacked a sentry post at Kiliveddi, about 35 km. south of Trincomalee around 8.30 p.m. Sunday.

Following the attack, the troops conducted a cordon and search operation in Kiliveddi Monday morning. The villagers were headed to a school compound and were interrogated, sources said.

Five youths who were arrested during the operation were taken to the Sri Lanka Army camp at 58th mile post. Two of them were later released, the sources said.
